These days, more and more businesses are running their computer servers off of virtual systems. This allows for smaller server rooms and fewer IT staff, and it can also allow for quicker system reboots and recoveries if you have the right type of backup system installed. Using the right type of backup can mean the difference between a quick VMware ESX data recovery and a system crash that takes valuable hours to restore.

Most backup systems actually add more stuff to what was supposed to be a streamlined, virtual system, but having the right type of recovery system will keep your virtual server from being clogged up when data needs to be restored. Instead of protecting your servers with more servers, you should be able to use a system that relies on software to recover your data almost instantly.

Basically, a recovery system for a virtual server will help restore your files, and it will back them up regularly. Instead of using one physical server to mirror – and thus backup – another, though, this type of system will use another virtual server to back up the virtual servers you already have. If the first server crashes, the backed-up server can take its place and reboot all the data so that you don’t lose anything.

You’ll also want a recovery system that will allow for file-level restoration. When your system gets backed up with too much duplicated data, it can take some time for individual files to be restored. To ensure that this doesn’t happen, use a virtual backup system that speeds up backup and restoration by de-duplicating data. When the files are smaller, they’re easier to sort through, so you can have file-level restorations finished in a flash. Even though VMware is great, it’s even better if you have the right type of restoration program to help it along.
